FlipSide (Xbox 360) Review

E-mail Print PDF

FlipSide is a simple and challenging game on the Xbox Live Indie Games service that makes use of both of the 360's joysticks. The object is to control two ships and guide them through tight small openings, while this indeed a simple concept seen in a game like Wario Ware Inc. Microgames its pulled off with a lot more style in this indie title.

The game offers 4 very challenging levels (5 in total) comparably to the Bit.Trip series on the Nintendo Wii. The first level is more of a tutorial level and yet even that level becomes a bit tricky near the end after the game warns you it will get harder. There are 3 songs in the game which can be changed with the bumper buttons. They are decent enough but players not needing the trance like music blasting will seek the mute button to fully concentrate.

FlipSide for Xbox 360 Indie Games

The controls are extremely tight and responsive, letting the failure of the player moving the ships in the wrong direction be an error of the player instead of design. The game also allows a player to decide if they want to play it cautiously or arrogant. Allowing the player to move their ship to the very bottom of the screen or move it closer to where the lines appear into the game.

The other game you play in FlipSide is with your brain trying to control two ships at once. It takes a bit of time to adjust to controlling one ship at a time and suddenly having to switch to the other. The way the game throws together a constant barrage of zig zagging obstacles prevents the game from ever getting easy and with no checkpoints will keep those seeking brutal difficulty satisfied.

FlipSide is a cheaper and better version of Schizoid, while Schizoid made controlling both ships difficult, this game demands it and its better off for it. FlipSide is an 80 Microsoft Point ($1) title and for those looking for a challenge on par with the Bit.Trip series its worth the dollar especially if you manage to complete all 5 stages you can always play endless mode.
