Chime (Xbox 360) Review

E-mail Print PDF

Chime is everything I could have ever wanted in a five dollar title. Its fast paced, addicting, visually pleasing, and soothing in a way all its own. Did I mention 60% of all purchase cost will go to aid multiple charities? Yes, that’s right, you can purchase a cheap and amazing Xbox Live Arcade game and argue you somehow made a difference all while sitting on your couch!

Being a music dominate puzzle title, gameplay is literally the only thing that matters. Seemingly a hybrid of Tetris and Lumines (while possibly borrowing elements of E4) this is not a mere ripoff of DDR or Guitar Hero; its Chime! The playing field of Chime exists as a square 2D field. You are given a series of random shapes, much like in Tetris; and must place the shapes somewhere on your grid. As you place more shapes, and attempt to create large squares; added parts of a song get thrown into your background music. That’s a general view, though more complex elements exist-honestly it would be rather pointless to explain, I suggest you just download the Trial version of the game and see for yourself. It’s just that good, for five dollars you won't find many XBLA games of comparable quality.

In terms of content, we have a somewhat small amount though in multiple variations. Five songs are included, each offering a timed mode (3, 6, and 9 minutes allotted) as well as a stress-free unlimited mode. Time given to complete a stage (completely covering the grid) is essentially the difficulty, if you can 100% a stage in three minutes, my hat is off to you. For the less serious, the timeless mode exists where you can easily complete a level and listen to a full song at your own pace. It’s certainly challenging (Yes, Achievements are tough) to do extremely well in this game, but even the most casual gamers will enjoy Chime.

No multiplayer exists, which didn't strike me as an issue. Being as much of a puzzler as a rhythm game, single play is all that’s required to enjoy Chime. Content can appear limited, but with a high potential for DLC songs, and considering the price tag, it’s worth every penny.

Even if I were to completely disregard the pricing of Chime, I'd still be here to tell you it’s a good deal worth your time. Higher purchase price would naturally alter the amount of content expected, but gameplay shines on its own. Nothing bothered me with Chime, at all; I never got frustrated, I never felt ripped off. I just wanted to continue playing. For 400 Microsoft Points, you can’t go wrong.
