Young Thor (PSP) Review

E-mail Print PDF

Young Thor is a fully featured Playstation Mini title that has enough content to justify it's price tag. The game opens with a beautiful telling of the norse mythology that sets the entire game into place. Young Thor holds a cartoonish style tight to its chest while still attempting a serious level of attitude.

The game has players running and jumping in-between the beat-em-up sections. I was not a big fan of the platforming as much as I was the combat. The combat is deep enough to set up combos and have players properly strategize to beat enemies. Once you start hitting as early as 1-2, strategy plays a major factor in combat as spider enemies from the first stage stop fighting solo and battle you in groups. The combat lets you favor your choice of a grounded strike, a lightning revolved combat style or an aerial combo style. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages and to truly conquer this game you'll need to master all three styles.

Young Thor PSP and PS3 Mini Review

The problem off the bat with Young Thor is the such small amount of content. With 4 main levels conisisting of a few smaller ones the game will run you a few hours but thats the extent of it. The levels are pretty but there can be an excessive of platforming and not enough combat at times.

Replayability with Young Thor comes down to tracking the sometimes hidden powerups granting new abilities or stat boosting. The problem is with only one of these treasures per stage the only other replay can be found in hitting level 100 for the hell of it or taking on the game's 50 included achievements.

Young Thor has a price tag of $5 landing it as one of the most expensive minis. It's a solid yet simple experience but the price tag could turn some people off. If you want to see a showcase of Playstation Mini then this is the best option you can find. A sequel would be a smart idea from Frima, taking the established game and expanding it with more narrative and more content.
