Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) Review

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 wants to be the number 1 selling game of all time. It’s already crushed the record for top sales on day one. I’ve been highly anticipating this game since it was announced. This title is absolutely spectacular in just about every way. It really is the must-have game. I don’t mean of the year, but of all time. If you don't have this game, you're missing out. Read on for details or go out now and get it.

Modern Warfare 2 will certainly keep you playing. The latest version of Call of Duty is going to hold your attention for minimum a week or two. The short but sweet campaign, the very tactical Spec Ops Mode, and the famous Call of Duty Multiplayer deliver enough to ruin the social life of any shooter fan. The campaign replay value is okay, and Veteran isn’t something you can (or should) approach right away. The multiplayer is the meat on this pizza. You, along with everyone else, will be completely hooked once you get online. Word has it that Lindsay Lohan recently gave up drinking, looking cracked out, and hitting parked cars thanks to the addictive power of Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer.

Modern Warfare 2's story will keep you on the edge of your seat. I thought the campaign could have been done a little bit better, but as mentioned before that’s not the meat here. There were not enough cut scenes, to tell the truth (first time I’ve said that). I think some more cut scenes could have bridged the gap a little better between missions. The only complaint I had was at how short the campaign was. There is only about 5 hours worth of campaign on Normal difficulty. The ending of the game is pretty satisfying however. I won't spoil it for you though. As short as the campaign may be, the rest of the title makes up for it. If you haven’t played Call of Duty 4, you might be a little confused at times when the story revolves around previous characters, but you’ll still have fun along the way. Once you complete the campaign, you’ll likely notice that it looks like Infinity Ward may very well already be planning a Modern Warfare 3.

The new Spec Ops is a bunch of missions based on the campaign. You’ll do something different in each of these missions. The missions range from area defense (hold the position), gunning from helicopters (man anti-craft positions), to the very fun snowmobile race game. Spec Ops allows 1 and 2 players to use tactical and strategic approaches. So if you don’t have a buddy or sibling to hit the split screen with, you can play over the internet on PSN or XBL with a fellow soldier.

Now on to the big stuff soldier. The multiplayer here is way better than that of Call of Duty 4's, which many gamers had logged hundreds hours in. In multiplayer you will notice the constant air support from both teams. There will be helicopters dropping crates, Missiles dropping onto the battlefield, helicopters attacking defenseless infantry, air strikes flying overhead and the occasional infamous AC130. Air support is a big part of the multiplayer. There’s almost a completely new set of weapon here. Only a few have returned from CoD 4. The P90, M16, and Dragonov are just a few examples of the returning tools of death. The new guns are definitely nice, and sure to please any gun nut. There are a lot of weapon attachments this time around too. The multiplayer on Modern Warfare 2 is just so huge. I could go on for the entire review about the multiplayer, but this is just a game you’ll have to play for yourself.

While no game is perfect, Modern Warfare 2 being no exception. MW2 only has a few minor problems like silly AI popping up in your line of fire. Nothing major is wrong with the game. And as picky as I am, that’s huge. Modern Warfare 2 is probably going to be the number 1 selling game of all time. And that appears to have been Activision’s goal all along. This is certainly the must-have multi-platform game of the year, and is likely to achieve a Game of the Year Award. If you haven’t gathered by now, I’m saying you should buy this game. You won’t regret it.
