Dead Space Ignition (PS3) Review

E-mail Print PDF

Dead Space Ignition is more than just a prologue to the upcoming sequel for EA’s hit Dead Space. It’s also a pretty interesting way to get the attention of those thinking about picking up the retail game Dead Space 2. In addition to offering special DLC in the form of a suit for Isaac that players can use in Dead Space 2, Ignition is also free for anyone who pre-orders the sure-to-be blockbuster Dead Space 2. Even if you don’t pre-order the sequel, you can purchase Ignition for five bucks. There’s only one problem though, Dead Space Ignition is boring as hell and uglier than the last single chick sitting at the bar when the lights come on at the club at 2am.

Visually this game is a crapfest. Imagine if the team behind Metalocalypse on Adult Swim was told to do a videogame, but they could only use barely moving flash animation and they then blind folded them and threw acid in their faces. Why the acid? Because the makers of this game are cruel monsters who like to inflict pain. I know that because I was forced to play it. The mini-games clash with the rest of the games look as they take on a different 3D display. Regardless of what the intended effect was, the game is pure ugly in terms of appearance.

Dead Space Ignition sucks!

The gameplay itself is no different and can best be described as a pure waste of time. You basically just watch this “interactive comic” to see what happens before Isaac even arrives as you don’t necessarily control Franco and his partner, but hit a button or two every now and then. At first, things aren’t horrible. We all loved the comics that were downloadable on PSN and XBL. But as a “game”, this is pure fail. From System Override to Hardware Crack, nothing is fun and honestly each mini-game becomes more annoying and boring. The story isn’t nearly as bad as the gameplay. Honestly, Visceral and EA would have been far better off not even bothering with the horribly bad mini-games and just sold gamers another flash comic.

Overall, this prequel to a sequel is a bust! In what has to be considered a graphical fail, gameplay fail, and fun fail, there’s just nothing good here. If you got it for free due to pre-ordering Dead Space 2, then at least you got a free suit for Isaac. That is if you can in fact handle the boredom this game provides. If you made the mistake of purchasing this game, our sympathy is with you. Isaac has suffered less being torn limb from limb in the original Dead Space. Seriously, Dead Space Ignition is that bad! Replay value is so close to zero, because once you have the suit, you'll never want to touch this thing again.
