Marines Modern Urban Combat (Wii) Review

E-mail Print PDF

This game could easily be called Marines: Modern Wiifare based on its title cash in, but it plays out like a mix of Modern Warfare and the PC title S.W.A.T. 4. And it has a lot going for it and is not a cheap cash in; it’s just a few technical fixes away from sleeper hit. In fact what makes this so worth playing is the fact it borrows heavily from popular titles and adding on to it, it doesn't try to reinvent the wheel.

Enemies are a bit of a disappointment as most appear like cardboard cut-outs similar to a Wild West light gun game of old. Most even resemble such and although 3D they resemble faux 3D at best a trick used in Game Boy Advance FPS titles like James Bond 007 Everything or Nothing. Of course the other problem here is enemies close fall like dominoes but at a distance nothing seems to take down the baddies as your bullets fly past.

Marines Modern Urban Combat Review

What really can be annoying is the fact these enemies pop out of nowhere, although being very realistic it makes little sense when an enemy appears sometimes two inches behind a spot you walked through. The enemies in the background I can forgive much more.

Graphically the game is not as astounding as a big budget title like Call of Duty: Reflex but as a budget title it holds up and especially where it counts in frame rate. The enemies do look pretty bad as most character models do in the game but the closer you get to them the better they seem to look in terms of being 3D models and not cardboard cutouts.

The controls borrow heavily on Metroid Prime 3 (or Trilogy) and really feel natural. It is one of the games most promising features until the game requires you to turn, at this point the game starts to heave a bit lagging as you slowly turn. This isn't always the case but it’s enough that as form fitting the controls are to aiming, shooting and moving it simply can fall apart on you.

It’s a quiet world in Marines but it makes the game better. With no overpowering musical score to interfere it is just your character and gunfire. It is always easy to tell what general direction the enemy is in because of this but bad because the visuals of the enemy aren't always as easy a spot.

Marines Modern Urban Combat Review

Marines implies plural and this game actually holds up to this promise offering you up a really useful four player squad of fellow Marines. These marines can be ordered to cover you or attack head on and using them for your dirty work is well worth it, a strategy employed in S.W.A.T. 4 where this mechanic originates from. The difference is Destineer's AI is better than 2k's is because the AI works you can play the game as intended, taking things at a slower pace and outwitting rather than out gunning. Also like S.W.A.T 4 not taking caution of your team members can be costly as they can die leaving you with less firepower. Health can be recovered though so keep that in mind!

Modern Urban Combat is worth the budget price tag of $30 and holds up as a competitor to the other realistic first person shooters on the system. The Wii is a good place for this title with motion controls that work and despite some issues, lets you enjoy and finish the game. There is also no better moment than ordering covering fire from your squad and watching them just empty entire clips everywhere in the enemies direction letting you sneak to your next alcove, which is where Marines becomes more than a budget title.

Hi,
I am unable to find any game guide for this game. I am currently stuck in the subway which is dark and have to use night vision. Can you proved any suggestions?

Thanks
