The Xbox 360 Slim Beats PS3 Slim in Heat Tests Multiple Times

E-mail Print PDF

Xbox 360 SAfter doing a test to compare both the PS3 and new Xbox 360 S model two weeks ago, we got a lot of feedback that was both positive and negative. More than a few emails and comments criticized our choice to use a 160 GB PS3 (fat) model in our tests instead of using the newer slim model. In order to ensure the test did offer consistent and precise results, we decided to have both Craig Hasselback and myself (The Brandon Arthur Thompson Esquire) handle five separate tests over a week’s time. The goal was to determine whether or not the results were in fact flawed and also to see if a different outcome would come about using the newer PS3 slim.

Due to an inability to acquire five Xbox 360 S models and five PS3 slims; we ran the test using four identical Xbox 360 S consoles and one Xbox 360 Premium (old) model. The consoles were partnered with four PS3 slims and the original 160gb PS3 fat. This allowed for a fat versus fat and multiple slim versus slim. For the games, we had to do it out of pocket, so we grabbed six copies of Madden 09 and ran three pairings and then one pair of slims and the fats. The tests conducted consisted of game simulations running until one system or another overheated (or shutdown in each test).

The slims took the longest despite being in closed cabinets. We had to conduct the comparison in closed cabinets to simulate entertainment centers because all six consoles ran fine through the first two work days with not a single console freezing, shutting down, or malfunctioning.

After putting the consoles in barely ventilated cabinets, the tests finally “heated up”. In every slim model tests, the PS3 models shutdown first. This occurred multiple times as we tested each pairing three times. This doesn’t mean the PS3 models are faulty by any means. It simple means they’re designed to shutdown at a lower temp or possibly they heat up faster. Even after multiple tests in identical situations with high temp exposure, not a single console showed any sign of damage after rebooting. The “fat” models however were a much easier test in terms of time and results. The PS3 160gb won this test in under five hours. Sadly the 360 Premium (fat model) was under able to reboot as we got red ring and boxed that one up.

The fat model results are not a real big surprise. We’ve known the issues the original Xbox 360 SKUs have had since 2005. The new models however continue to surprise with improved reliability and the ability to handle heat much better than their predecessor.

Not too surprised. The new Xbox 360 is refined and it took almost 5 years just to make it reliable.

ps3 and the ps3 slim deserves tonnes of credit simply due to the internal power supply. imagine if it wasn't internal, chances are it would last for weeks.

What's funny is there will be a bunch of fanboys crying: "The power supply is external!" - "The PS3 is setup to shutdown earlier".

What they don't factor in is that the new 360 has an auto shutdown at high temps too, but can last longer.

#5 Small-sample test done by fanboys = meaninglessTony 2010-07-12 16:03
What's funny is that in the long run, there might STILL be more defective Xbox 360 S units returned than the PS3. I'm not convinced at all by a single small-sample "objective" test done by an Xbox 360 fanboy (as evidenced by his prior articles) that the Xbox 360 really has finally kicked the RROD (or whatever it's changed into now that the actual "red ring" has been removed physically). We don't know the exact methodology of the test that was done, and whether it was biased or not; we have every reason to believe that a fanboy would slant the test and the results in the favor of the console he's partial to.

*Awaits actual defect rates and return rates surveys that will be conducted by legitimate statistical sources in a few months time*

I guess we'll know the truth soon enough.

Did you put the 360's power supply in the sealed box with it? If not then this test = total fail.

To be fair, if you play your consoles in closed spaces for hours, it serves you right if it shuts down/breaks.

Huh whats so fanboy about those comments if they're true? And the Xbox S shutting down at higher temps, ummm obviously it's going to last longer?

The PS3 will always produce more heat than the Xbox, thats a fact. But what's also a fact is that the Xbox will melt it's own GPU due to the inability to remove that heat from the internals.

It's good to hear Sony and Microsoft have improved the technology. However, only an idiot would treat it like a regular piece of stereo equipment.

Well it looks like it might be time to reinvest in the 360! Now if I could only find a used 360S! I still refuse to give M$ anymore of my $ so used games&console if Im to give it another go. Props to Sony though, somehow they are able to engineer a truly reliable system from the first day on sale and WITH THE PS3s POWER BRICK BEING INTERNAL

To the poster who is not surprised the 360S won because it took X amount of years etc etc, you mean like the PS3 did as well don't you ?, have you forgotten about the PS3 YLOD and the BRLOD or have you a selective memory problem.
Well done to MS.

The truth is yes it would last longer, but who gives a care which system heats up faster,I run my PS3 and 360 for the same amount of time and they have never malfunctioned on me.Thing is,as long as you take care of them, they'll last you for a long time,so enjoy them ^.^

did you put the 360's power brick inside the cabinets too? those things can really heat up, and the ps3 has an internal power brick so the only way for a fair test is to put the 360's brick inside the cabinets, otherwise your test is flawed

Well done to MS.

The thing is bro everyone who pays even the slightest bit of attention to the gaming industry would know that the problems the 360 had or may still have are on an entirely different level from what you want to think the PS3 had! If what your saying is so true and the PS3 also had a failure rate of 34%-52% then why no added warranty for the PS3? Why you ask? Because it never had anywhere near the problems the X-Botch had! The biggest failure rate for the PS3 that Ive ever seen was 11% and that does not call for massive warranty extensions bro! Come on bro get your head out your ars! Lol!
